'CWC demands are too dangerous'- SLFP
[Oct. 05, 2005]
The SLFP General Secretary said that the 19 demands put forward by the Ceylon Workers Congress to the ruling party presidential candidate are too dangerous for ethnic harmony and economic development in the country.
General Secretary Mr. Maithripala Sirisena said that some of the demands would further divide the Sinhala-Tamil relationship as far as ethnic harmony is concerned in the plantation sector.
“The CWC is only concerned about their interest. Any peace-loving leader cannot agree for that,” SLFP Secretary said.
The CWC’s 19 demands include, recruitment of 1000 plantation youths to the Police department, implement the expansion of the Sri Patha College of Education and make it exclusive to the Tamil medium, Demarcate Tamil Grama Sevaka and Samurdhi Divisions in the districts of Kandy, Matale, Kalutara, Rathnapura, Kegalle, Nuwaraeliya, Galle, Matara and appoint Tamil officers.
He added that Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa strongly rejected their demand of an immediate stop to the construction of Kotmale and Norochcholai coal power plants.
“These two power plants are vital for economic development. I don’t know how UNP can agree for these demands,” SLFP secretary pointed out.
