Prime Minister Hon Mahinda Rajapaksa handed over nomination papers Friday morning for November 17 presidential election to Election Commissioner Mr. Dayananda Dissanayake.

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who is pledging to create a new political culture in Sri Lanka, declared his asserts according to the election law.
Two weeks ago Election Commissioner has urged all presidential nominees to declare their personal asserts before the November 17th poll for the country’s top job. Respecting the country’s law, Prime Minister and UPFA presidential hopeful has declared his asserts and submitted the full report to the Election Commissioner. Election Commissioner has confirmed the report and added so far only two candidates have submitted the relevant legally binding documents to him.
“Normal practice is that no one is taking serious efforts to declare his or her asserts before the election. In that context Premier has given a good example for all of us,” JVP Propaganda Secretary Wimal Werawansa told ColomboPage. Commenting his decision to submit his assessts to the Election Commissioner, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said that he should obey each and every rule in the land before he takes the leadership.
“I personally believe that these things should first come from the top, particularly from the leaders,” he said.
He added that Sri Lanka needs more clean and sincere leaders at this crucial juncture and he wants to prove himself as a different leader to the Nation.
“I urged all candidates to submit their assert reports to the Commissioner and help him to conduct a free and fair election,” Premier said.
