‘Nenasalas will enhance IT literacy of our population’-PM
[Sep. 01, 2005]
Prime Minister Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa says Nenasalas (ICT centers) are serving the rural population of Sri Lanka, who otherwise will not have access to global knowledge through computers.
“The Nenasalas will also enhance IT literacy of our country,” Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says at the handing over ceremony of Korean computers at the Prime Minister’s office today (01).
The Korean government hands over 175 computers to Prime Minister’s Nenasala or e-Library programme. The Nenasalas will set up in all rural areas through out the country.
"The Sri Lankan computer literacy rate, which is around 10 percent, would be increased to 50 percent within the next three years," Prime Minister said. He added that this is the goal he would achieve to ensure that Sri Lanka’s population would be able to find better employment opportunities either in Sri Lanka or abroad.
“The future of Sri Lanka depends on how much our rural population will be empowered. This empowerment must be an all aspects, namely, economically, socially, spiritually and educationally. When rural productivity goes up, our national productivity will definitely go up,” the Prime Minister says.
"The e-Sri Lanka initiative is coordinated by ICT Agency which is comes under my preview and the objective is to spread Information Technology to the villages," the Prime Minister said.
