WE ARE NOT PREPARING FOR WAR, SAYS PREMIER
    [Sep. 13, 2005]

Prime Minister Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa and Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) Secretary Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobitha Thera yesterday exchanged their policy statements at the foot of the Wariyapola Sri Sumangala statue within the precincts of the Sri Dalada Maligawa, Kandy.

Earlier, the Prime Minister received the blessings of the Triple Gem. Addressing the gathering, Rajapaksa said they had come to an understanding with the JHU for the Presidential Election, for the country's good.

"We are not preparing for war by entering into this agreement with the JHU.

"We categorically reject war as we all yearn for peace which is permanent and sustainable for all Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and Malays to live and co-exist in an environment free of fear and suspicion," the Prime Minister said.

Hon. Rajapaksa said devolving power within the framework of a unitary state was the Government's responsibility.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga was also committed to this cause, he said.

"While nurturing Buddhism as clearly prescribed in the country's Constitution, we will ensure that all other religions too are protected. People of all ethnic communities, religious and political parties will be protected.

"We will strive to eradicate poverty from our land and bring about a peace loving, law abiding and just society," the Prime Minister said.

"People of all ethnicities, consisting of Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims, Burghers and Malays and belonging to all political parties, the SLFP, JVP, JHU, CP, LSSP and others should rally together to protect our nation. This is our pledge at the Sri Dalada Maligawa," he said.

Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobitha Thera and Ven. Ellawela Medhananda Thera also spoke. (BY Daily News Photo by Sudath Silva)
