JHU drops their main demand for Sri Lanka PM
[Sep. 20, 2005]
“It’s going to definitely have an impact for PM’s campaign.”
Sept 20, Colombo: In its latest move, the Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) has decided to withdraw its main demand from presidential candidate Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to introduce an anti-conversion bill in Parliament.
Other religious groups had worried over the demand and the Prime Minister managed to convince them at the last minute.
“It’s going to definitely have an impact for PM’s campaign,” a senior Catholic leader told ColomboPage on condition of anonymity.
Earlier, the JHU strongly lobbied for introducing an anti-conversion bill in Parliament, amidst criticism by religious and human right activists.
“JHU decided to withdraw the bill as the threat of conversion to other religions would not exist when PM Rajapaksa becomes the President,” JHU parliamentary group leader Ven. Athuraliye Rathna thero said.
Minority religious groups, specifically Catholics and other Christians, had expressed disappointment over the PM’s electoral pact with the JHU.
