Sri Lanka PM vows to establish Children's Ministry

Sept 29, Colombo: Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa has pledged to establish a Children's Ministry to protect the rights of children and to develop a systematic mechanism to secure women's rights if he is elected President.

The Premier was addressing the SLFP Women's League at Temple Trees yesterday. He discussed at length problems such as the rising cost of living with over 5000 women from all over the country.

He pointed out the importance of enhancing women's representation in Parliament, which is only around 4 percent at present, even though women constitute 53 percent of the total population.
He also said that only three other countries in the world have children's ministries, and he would be fully committed to protecting children's rights through this ministry.
